17 CHARLOTTA BASS – The story of Charlotta Bass is largely absent from the pages of history . The publisher of The California Eagle for nearly 40 years , she became the first Black woman to be nominated for vice president when she joined the Progressive Party ’ s ticket in 1952 .
20 JESSE JACKSON – In 1984 Jesse Jackson set into motion a political change that transformed America . In his first of two attempts to win the Democratic Party ’ s presidential nomination , Jackson brought millions of new voters into the political process and made it possible for Blacks to win election to a vast array of political offices – including the highest office in land .
