Journalism and mass communication are undergoing a dramatic change. Fueled by the rapidly expanding use of new technologies and the popularity of social media, this profession has adapted new ways of gathering and disseminating news and information.
Morgan State University’s School of Global Journalism & Communication is designed to provide students with the necessary skills to be effective communicators in this new environment. In addition to a curriculum that prepares students to be multimedia journalists, multiplatform content producers, or strategic communicators, it ensures they get the practical experience they need to successfully compete for jobs upon graduation.
Our state-of-the-art digital newsroom will give students real-time, deadline-driven assignments to sharpen the skills they gain in the classroom. BEAR-TV and WMUR – the campus television and radio stations we’re creating– will offer students an opportunity to produce audio and visual content in the same way it’s done in professional television and radio stations around the world.
The rapidly changing environment in journalism classrooms and newsrooms has generated a lot of debate, introspection and analysis among journalism academics and practitioners. With the creation of this publication – the Morgan Global Journalism Review – our School of Global Journalism & Communication joins this discourse.
This quarterly publication offers people whose voices have been ignored, or undervalued, a chance to be heard. It gives them an opportunity to weigh in on the important issues that journalists and journalism educators are increasingly being called upon to confront – and it significantly expands the participation of people of color in these life-altering conversations.
So, please join me in welcoming the arrival of the premiere issue of the Morgan Global Journalism Review – a publication that is a fitting contributor to Morgan State University’s determination to play a prominent role in “Growing the Future/Leading the World.”
