MGH Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging 2017 | Page 4

Message From the Director The MGH/HST Athinoula A. Martinos Center for Bio- medical Imaging has had another phenomenal year. Center researchers were as productive as ever in 2017, reporting impactful findings and cutting-edge techno- logical advances, and working together to further our mission of improving imaging in healthcare through our many, diverse activities. The publication you are holding focuses on three major areas. In the following pages you will find sections devoted to neuroimaging technologies, mental disor- ders research, and other clinically relevant findings. I would like to draw attention to just one of the articles here, while also noting a significant related milestone. In November we celebrated 20 years of FreeSurfer: a brain imaging software package introduced and continuously developed in the Center. Beginning on page 11, we take a look the past, present and future of the software and the seemingly countless advances it has made and will make possible: from studies of the brain during aging to the development of artificial intelligence in medical imaging. We also recount some of the many adventures the FreeSurfer group has had over the years—in part because they help to shed light on how the software has evolved but mostly because the stories are too good not to tell. Just one other thing I’d like to note: In 2017 the Center unveiled a new logo and brand system. We couldn’t be more excited about these as they capture perfectly the spirit and ethos of the Center and our investigators. You’ll see the full logo on the cover and can read more about it on the page opposite this one. Bruce Rosen, Director Athinoula A. Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging 1
