Life as a rally driver wasn't all driving as
one had to do publicity and being socia-
ble to the public. This apparently was to
include being photographed with a
'Miss World'! events. The pic below is from the 1968
BP Rally with Harry Firth in the photo.
Yes there was some driving! The pic
below shows the Ford at considerable
pace through outback Australia. Garry competed in many BP Rallies, the
pic below shows Garry competing in the
1972 BP Rally in a Datsun 1600.
After some gruelling driving through
many and varied countries and terrain
the rally drivers were welcomed into
Sydney at the end of the Marathon, by
large crowds.
After the London-Sydney Marathon
went on to compete in many other
The evening continued with Ed and
Garry comparing (competing) how
many events they had won, how many
championships they had won. Ed and
Garry were able to compare and con-
trast the level of technology and equip-
ment and cars each had encountered
during their careers. see pic below of
timing gear used in 1962. Apparently
navigating was done with a map and
compass!
