MGC conversations with Richard Mixture, August 2017
An Understeering Experience
H
ello again, it’s Richard here. Were
you there? No, well you missed
out on a wonderful celebration – MGC
50. Could you afford it? Yes, the long
week end was quite affordable but the
travelling cost was a little expensive –
flying from Australia to the UK.
MGC 50 was a fantastic event listening
to all those lucky people who attended.
It was the biggest gatherings of MGCs
since the production days at the Abing-
don Factory. The event was based at
Chateau Impney in Worcestershire, UK
over five days. There were many activi-
ties organised including visits to the
Royal Air Force Cosford Museum, the
Gloucestershire/Warwickshire Railway
and the British Motor Museum, and not
to forget the MGC Show Day. The or-
ganisers, capably chaired by Ginny
Cartmell (and not to forget the support
from her husband Barrie), were over the
moon to have 217 MGCs attend.
The MGC that travelled the farthest
came from New Zealand along with sev-
eral Kiwis and were joined by a several
Aussies. People and MGCs attended
from Belgium, Canada, Denmark,
France, Germany, Jersey, Netherlands,
Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland
and the United States. Not to forget that
95% of the attendees resided in the UK.
MGC GT which he received at school
and the Mineral Blue GT was his first car
after receiving his driver’s licence.
There were other interesting cars such
as KOV 257F, #GCD1 0122G, des-
patched on 1 st Nov 1967 to BMC Chair-
man, Sir George Harriman and ap-
peared in a magazine test in Oct 1968.
There was even a 1932 MG C Type, a
MGC ancestor maybe?
Tim Moore lives in Portree on the Isle of
Skye in Scotland and drove 1439 miles
(2316 km) door to door to the event.
He said “Amazing event, amazing peo-
ple at MGC 50. Incredible effort from the
brilliant committee to make all 217
MGC's who attended so welcome.”
There are lots of comments like that on
the MGC Face Book page.
The MGC 50 Committee was so happy
with the outcome of the event that they
are now talking about MGC 60. So start
saving now and I’ll see you there.
Remember ladies and gentlemen keep
‘em tuned,
Rich
Several of the cars that were displayed
are well known by Cophiles. There was
RMO 699F, FRX 692C and SGY 776F
(now WGU 277F). RMO of course is
one of the six aluminium MGC GTS,
Sebring race cars, while FRX is the first
development prototype MGC, #GCN1
0100G despatched on 1 st December
1965. SGY was HRH Prince Charles’
Barrie and Ginny Cartmell chair of the
organising committee
