quiet. The helis were flown in smooth exhibitions of power and skill- and they both are fine examples of the craftsmanship from Matthias and his company.
A fleet of military machines owned by Jay of NSMAC were frequently flown with many folks admiring the detailing work that he has done with them- including the semi-functional guns on the nose of the helis!
Sunday started out flat calm, so a buncha folks raced out to take advantage of the conditions before the forecasted showers came through. When the rain did arrive, folks covered up their gear to wait out the precipitation- and amused themselves with one of the fun competitions that had been organised-“ The Figure 8 of Death”, which involved a Traxx Evo car, some traffic cones and a stopwatch. And when this was done- a fresh battery was put into the car and folks went over to the fixed wing strip to race the car up and down it! Matthias enjoyed this part immensely, and was heard to say that he was gonna get one of these as soon as returned to his home in Germany! And this is from a guy who designs, builds and flies huge world class turbine helis!! The sun came out soon and flying resumed with more flights up to the close of the event.
The new Hughes 500E- stunning paint scheme and very striking in the air- very nimble”
Several awards were given out at the end of the event- and they were: Best Military Machine- Carl and his MI V24 Best Civilian Machine- Colin and his Skycrane Pilots Choice-picked by the fliers- Colin and his Skycrane again- well deserved! Best‘ save’ of the weekend – Simon and the G-47- very well deserved!!
Following the awards- a few words were spoken to recognise the one person who was no longer flying with us in person- Brett. Many of us have been recipients of his big smile and generous nature over the years- and an event like this is where we expect to see him. To help keep the passion and spirit of him alive- a new award has been created, the Brett Cudby Memorial Trophy. This is to be passed along each year to a Scale heli person who carries on the supportive and helpful attitude that Brett shared with us all.
This year, it has been given to Craig Anderson- a good friend and fellow club member of Brett’ s. Craig- who is also a heli mechanic in real life- was surprised and flattered to be the first person to receive the award. And, it appears that planning has already started for next years’ large scale event, with exact date and location yet to be confirmed- but hoped to be in the area of Brett’ s club.
Some of the machines present for the event- great variety "
To close- several folks that should be thanked for their help: Hobby City and RC Bandit- sponsorship, NSMAC for the field and facilities, Simon, Andre and Ben for the logistical support and finally- huge thanks to all of the flyers that took the time and all the effort to come along!!
Next year- bigger and better!!
Craig Andersons impressive Vario- flies as good as it looks "
