Celebrating America - Antiquing in the Treasure Valley

Junk finders, pickers, American pickers, all naming just about the same thing. One man's trash is another man's treasure and with the onset of shows on the History channel, we have started a new American past time, antiquing.

No doubt that the season of garage sales and antiquiing has begun!

Here are a few tips when searching for your own repurposed item.

From his article, American Pickers: One Man's Trash is another man's junk, Chris Cavallari spells out the true definition of being a good picker.

"A picker has to be part salesman, part negotiator, part ass-kisser, and all treasure hunter. I’m pretty adept at none of those qualities, but treasure hunter plays to my fantasies of finding something amazing and unique that I can bring back to life with a little elbow grease and determination. Watch the pros at your local flea market or neighborhood tag sale, or better yet, hold your own sale, and you’ll learn some amazing techniques that I’m sure can be applied to the business world or the dinner table. Just bear in mind that it’s a seller’s world out there. To you it may be treasure, but to them, it’s junk, and they’ll part with it only if they want to. And if the price is right.. " (Cavallari, 2014)

He further explains that there is a strong difference between going to "tag" sales vs. yard sales vs. garage sales.

A "tag" sale is so named for the little tags you put on the items. A yard sale is a sale done in your yard and a garage sale is done in your garage. Every region has different names but it turns out they all mean the same thing. A haven to find good deals on junk.

Now junk pickers don't stop at the neighborhood sales, no, they seek out goods from antique shops as well. And not all antique shops are created equal. We set out to find the best and found our top choice. We hope that you enjoy your day of picking and find that American treasure you were searching for. Happy picking!
