Michoacán
INNOVIA
Michoacán is a mixture of both inspiration and culture, a
magical territory with traditional villages, history and natural
beauty. Most of all, highlighted by its cuisine and artistic
expressions recognised as “The soul of Mexico”. Divided
into 113 regions and located in the west of the country,
it has approximately 5 million inhabitants. Morelia, the
capital of Michoacán, is also the most highly populated city
in the region. Formerly called Valladolid, it now holds its
name in honor of José María Morelos y Pavón, hero of the
independence of Mexico.
Furthermore, the word Michoacán comes from the
Nahualt voice “Michihuacán”, which means “place of
fishermen”. The meaning of the word is attributed to the
fact that the first pre-Hispanic populations were built around
the lakes of Pátzcuaro, Cuitzeo, Zirahuen and Zacapu. The
latter located 80 kilometers from the capital of Michoacan,
which according to the Purhépecha word means “Stone
Place”.
