Centennial
Centennial Community Education’ s adult program is thriving, bringing vital ESL and citizenship classes directly to our community. We’ re excited to highlight our in-person Citizenship class, now conveniently located at Centennial Square Mobile Home Community Room, Tuesdays at 7 PM. This initiative embodies our commitment to accessible education, taking needed classes where students live. Beyond citizenship, we offer diverse ESL options, both online and in-person, catering to various levels.

In addition to our Citizenship class, we offer a variety of ESL classes to help students improve their English language skills. Our ESL classes are taught by certified teachers who use a variety of teaching methods to meet the needs of all learners. We offer classes at all levels, from beginner to advanced.
We are committed to providing high-quality, affordable education to our community. We believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to learn and grow..

Columbia Heights / Fridley
The demand for English classes is not slowing down. We have added a number of new evening in-person classes this year( alongside our online offerings). At night this allows students to choose if they want to enroll in an in-person class at their level or an online class. We currently have seven classes / levels of ESL in the morning and eleven classes at night( duplicate class levels covering six levels). Despite the added classes, the waitlist has continued to hover around 300 people each month! Due to open enrollment, we are continually adding new students into the existing classes from the waitlist, but new students get added on to backfill the waitlist. It’ s a busy school!

Elk River
Bruce Mattson is the newest ABE instructor at Sherburne County Jail. After a varied career and a couple of starts at retirement, Bruce started at the jail in the fall of 2024. Bruce spent over 10 years as a dentist before selling his practice in 2000. He eventually returned to school to obtain his teaching license to instruct middle school life science. Since then, he’ s worked at several charter schools and even spent some time as a limo driver.

The changing face of K12 education had been a challenge, but Bruce had not felt ready to leave teaching when he retired. He discovered adult basic education after learning of the position from a former coworker, and current ABE teacher, Katie Johnson. Katie’ s recommendation, claiming that ABE learners were motivated and wanted to learn, was the catalyst to apply. Since starting to work with the adult learners at the jail, Bruce has been impressed with the community environment and collaboration between students and teachers. He says the classroom is a“ happy and enjoyable space with laughing and smiling”. This might be a contrast to what some expect of a school within a jail. He has quickly become a positive and valuable member of Elk River ABE’ s team. |
