The world of Adult Basic Education is vast , and it involves many people working together to build a community that provides a lot for adults who attend Metro North classes . In this regard , we would like to introduce some of the people behind the scenes who truly make our programs function . Metro North ABE is a partnership of eight school districts ’ Community Education departments that work together to smartly serve students in our collective districts . The directors of these community education departments are instrumental in supporting ABE , and we would like you to meet some of them .
Columbia Heights Community Education
Kristen Stuenkel ’ s journey within the educational sector is a testament to her dedication and passion for community development . With nearly 18 years of service in her current district , Kristen has become a cornerstone of Community Education . Her career began in a much different arena , working with unhoused populations in Washington DC and Minneapolis . These early experiences shaped her empathetic approach and underscored the importance of community support and education .
Driven by a desire to make a more significant impact , Kristen pursued a Master of Education ( M . Ed .) and obtained her teaching license . Her transition into the education field was marked by a strong commitment to fostering inclusive learning environments . Kristen ’ s initial role as a Parent Educator in Early Childhood Family Education ( ECFE ) introduced her to Community Education , a field she would grow to love deeply .
For the past 15 years , Kristen has served as the Director of Community Education , a role that has allowed her to innovate and expand educational opportunities for all community members . Six years ago , she took on the additional responsibility of Director of Communications , demonstrating her versatility and commitment to enhancing the district ’ s outreach and engagement efforts .
Kristen ’ s favorite aspect of Community Education is its inclusivity . She cherishes the idea that everyone in a community can be a student , regardless of age or background . This philosophy is evident in her approach to the ABE program , where she highlights the outstanding staff dedicated to supporting adult learners . Kristen is particularly proud of the ABE program ’ s impact but is also acutely aware of its limitations , such as the persistent waiting list for classes . She advocates for more flexible funding to address these challenges swiftly and effectively .
