Adult Basic Education ( ABE ) is a free program to help adults develop basic reading , writing , math and English skills to achieve their goals and thrive in their community and workplace . Metro North ABE is a partnership between eight school districts in the north metro area to provide these services in a range of locations and with various schedules to meet student needs . NEWS FROM OUR SITES
Anoka
There is news from all fronts in the Anoka cluster of programs . We have enhanced our ESL classes to offer hybrid programming , allowing learners to participate online , but also be on campus one night a week ( so far ) to learn in-person and to build relationships that can only happen face-to-face .
Our collaborative partnership with Anoka-Ramsey Community College and Anoka Technical College to support pre-credit level learners continues to grow and we are exploring offering more than mathematics in order to transform the learning experience and help more learners reach their goal of college degrees and technical certificates .
And , in bittersweet fashion , we also have transitions of our own as our long-time GED and TEAS prep instructor , Kathy Lundquist , has opted to retire . Her dedication to her learners and to learning has helped many , many learners graduate high school , earn other secondary credentials , enroll in colleges , get better jobs , and master the English language . It has been an honor to work with her , and it ’ s difficult to say goodbye . Metro North ABE wishes Kathy well in her next pursuits , but also enthusiastically welcomes the talented Sue Peterson to the fold to pick up this important work with her own commitment and flair ! Sue is also a very dedicated and experienced adult educator who brings a wealth of background knowledge and talents to the Anoka cluster of programs .

Blaine
The Blaine Learning Lab has a new look ! An updated front office has new furniture , and the old cubicle design was removed and taken away . Now when you enter the main office , the open concept is more inviting . The design has a more natural flow , it ’ s more intuitive for newcomers to see where they can stop and ask questions , and the waiting area is more comfortable . A few office / classroom spaces also received some needed updates , and there is more to come . Please stop in , say “ hello ,” and see the improved space !
Brooklyn Center
This is the second year that Brooklyn Center has had a full-time literacy assistant to support site volunteers , assist with outreach , and coordinate all intake and progress testing . Amy Carruthers has been a powerful support for morning and evening staff and learners . The morning ESL classes are taught by Janet VanBenthuysen , MaryBeth Habel , and Megan Nuthals . And evening ESL classes are covered by Janet and Amy Domeier . Jessie Smelter leads the Reasoning Through Language Arts class for the PM GED consortium-wide program . This creative , hard-working team is serving adult learners from 44 different countries and 31 languages ( the top three languages of learners are Spanish , English , and French ).
