result being enhanced demands in the area of water distribution, transport facilities, housing, healthcare, etc. In order to meet these requirements in a sustainable way, the city corporation with the motto‘ Sustainable City of Thiruvananthapuram’ has published a draft master plan for the capital. It elaborates upon the necessities of the fast developing city and the means to achieve it through efficient coordination, decentralized planning and swift service delivery. The master plan proposes division of the city in to four zones, which are city core, central city, outer city and city periphery. Each of the four zones has individual development strategies. Core city zone is envisioned to grow in service sector, healthcare, hospitality, tourism, and commercial sector. Regulated development is planned for this zone. Central city zone is planned for redevelopment viewing at the low population density. This zone would be ideal for extending the existing commercial area of the core city. Future residential demands can be provided in the outer city zone since vacant plots are available. Hence, intensive development will be carried out in outer city. Agriculture area is concentrated in the city periphery zone and conservative development would be strategy for this zone. To avoid traffic congestion, a comprehensive road network in proposed in the master plan.
