READPLAYTALK BOARD SETS VISION
FOR UPCOMING SCHOOL YEAR
O
n Friday, July 28 the ReadPlayTalk
(RPT) board members met for an
all-day workshop, facilitated by Karen
Permetti of engage2learn. Superintendent
Dr. David Vroonland kicked off the meeting
with a personal testimony detailing why
this initiative is close to his heart. He also
explained the importance of having key
players from every market sector as a board
representative of RPT.
Throughout the day, the board members learned
more about their specific roles and how each of
them will fine-tune, implement and oversee the
RPT efforts in their specialized fields. The group
broke into teams to brainstorm beliefs, calls to
action and goals. Key words discussed when
collaborating included: “opportunity,” “influence,”
“culture enhancement,” “support,” “love,” “care,”
“passion” and “creating a better future, all together.”
An example of one of the board’s contending calls
to action is: “The ReadPlayTalk Board encourages,
Page 14
empowers and collaborates with families,
community members and stakeholders to create
an opportunity for every student to be at or above
reading level by third grade.”
The board members began to mesh as a
team throughout the day of collaborating and
strategizing. They began building the pillars that
will serve as a foundation for this unique childhood
literacy initiative, starting right here in Mesquite,
Texas.
