MERSEY LIFE TALK TO ALI JUMA
Tell us about yourself . I am a senior Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon of 19 years of experience as a consultant , 29 years in total in plastic surgery , and 34 years as a doctor . I spent 12 years as an NHS consultant before deciding to go into full time private practice .
I am married to my long-time best friend , Clíona . We have two sons , who are growing up far too quickly . 3 cats , Barney ( chief cat !), Fluffy and yes , he is fluffy ; then Fudge who thinks he is a big leopard !
What was your career pathway ? I started my education at King ’ s College , Canterbury ( the oldest school in the UK ), and medical school at Saint Bartholomew ’ s Hospital London ( the oldest hospital in the UK ). I obtained my general surgical fellowship at the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh in 1992 and my specialist fellowship in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery in 2002 , which qualified me to be a consultant in the field . In 2010 I was honoured to be granted the prestigious general surgical fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons England Ad Eundem .
Why Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery ? The speciality of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery is most dynamic , and , after nearly three decades , I find its excitement has not waned . As a plastic surgeon , I am also a cosmetic surgeon . Plastic surgery has restoration of appearance and function at its foundation and ethos , a characteristic which attracted me to it at a very early stage of my career .
Why Liverpool and the Northwest ? A career in plastic surgery is very competitive , to say the least . Embarking on such a career meant you followed the job , however , after 25 years in Liverpool and the Northwest it is not just a matter of career . We as a family love the city and its people and have “ adopted ” it as our home .
What surgery and treatments do you perform ? As a plastic , reconstructive and cosmetic surgeon my interests include not only surgical treatments like breast augmentation and uplift , breast reduction , facelift and neck lift , eyebags removal with midface rejuvenation , rhinoplasty , body contouring ( e . g ., tummy tuck and liposuction ). This is not an exhaustive list of the procedures I perform .
I also offer non-surgical wrinkle relaxing injections , dermal fillers to rejuvenate the face , and other non-surgical treatments ( such as radiofrequency rejuvenation with Indiba Deep Care ) which can be combined with surgery or other non-surgical treatments to achieve the best results .
Such hybrid treatments in my opinion are the way forward to achieve best cosmetic outcomes , keeping in mind minimal downtime when possible .
Prior to implementing any treatment , we believe in tailoring treatments to each patient through following a detailed consultation process , factoring in time to reflect on the plans discussed and developed together . Your safety remains our main focus .
Why did you start your own clinic ? As a plastic surgeon and at the start of my career it was the accepted norm to be hospital based . Having been a consultant for more than 19 years I have seen the dynamics of work change and patients ’ requirements with it . Hence , I created my new boutique clinic on Rodney St , Liverpool . This helps me to offer patients an alternative when undergoing non-surgical treatments . It is a venue akin to home from home , rather than the purely clinical atmosphere a hospital offers . Providing the highest level of safety remains the ethos of the clinic .
Meanwhile , I continue to enjoy consulting and operating at Spire Murrayfield hospital on the Wirral , as I have done for the last seventeen years .
What is The Clinic @ 51 ? The Clinic @ 51 is a cosmetic surgery and non-surgical treatment clinic in the heart of Liverpool on the first floor of 51 , Rodney Street . Just like the beautiful Georgian architecture , the clinic is spacious , full of character and with a friendly , welcoming and professional atmosphere .
The clinic offers the latest techniques in facial rejuvenation and body contouring . We have had a good year even during challenging times and we hope to go from strength to strength . We have many exciting plans for the future which we will share with you in due course .
Is there time in a busy schedule for hobbies ? In a busy week , striking a work / life balance is of profound importance in all walks of life . How do I relax ? From the structure of a professional life , my relaxing time perhaps has less emphasis on structure and more on fun and letting my hair down … did I just say that ? Perhaps less of the hair and more of the fun . I enjoy classic cars , playing chess and backgammon . I enjoy cooking and creating my own individualised recipes . At an early stage of my career , I had plans to write a cookbook which one day I will complete . This has been replaced by writing medical literature and most recently , a book chapter entitled “ The Safe Evolution of Liposuction and Liposculpture ”.
