FREE GARDENING WORKSHOPS WITH THE KNOWSLEY FLOWER SHOW COMMITTEE
ST EDWARD ’ S COLLEGE COMMENDED
Education charity , the PTI , has announced the Geography department at St Edward ’ s College in Liverpool as commended for the Bernice McCabe Award at a Ceremony at Merchant Taylors ’ Hall . Bernice McCabe OBE , who sadly passed away in February 2019 , was the founding co-director of the PTI and believed in the transformative power of inspiring subject teaching .
Knowsley residents are invited to take part in FREE gardening workshops and pick up some hand tips about gardening and growing .
Taking place on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 October from 12pm-4pm at Court Hey Park , L16 3NA , budding horticulturists can have a go at planting seeds and young winter plants which they can then take home .
Attendees will learn how gardening and spending time in the garden can boost mental health and wellbeing and relieve stress and anxiety not forgetting improving physical health .
There is also an opportunity to explore the rich history of the show as the committee ’ s pop up National Heritage Lottery Fund exhibition will be on site .
Attendees are also invited to take a visit around the wonderful Incredible Edibles site and see first hand the growing experience .
Sadly , the Knowsley Flower Show has hasn ’ t been held since 2019 but it is back next year and taking place on Saturday 6 August for Feelgood Festival and Sunday 7 August 2022 Knowsley Flower Show .
By taking part in these open days and learning the first steps to the art of gardening and growing you might even become exhibitors in the show yourselves ! Attendees can also joining the organising team of the Knowsley Flower Show and learn the benefits of becoming a valued volunteer and helping to plan the borough ’ s flagship event .

The Award has been created to remember Bernice and to promote and celebrate excellence in subject leadership in schools , recognising departments that put quality subject teaching at the heart of the classroom . A £ 5,000 prize and trophy is awarded annually to an exceptional department which demonstrates the ethos and values of the PTI through their work within and beyond the curriculum . The Geography department at St Edward ’ s College ’ s vision was to ensure curriculum was at the core of all learning experiences , deliberately designed to cultivate Geographers who are resilient citizens , thinking globally , acting locally and living sustainably operating as role models for society . The Geography department promotes ‘ Everyday Geographies ’.
John Wilkinson , Head of Department , said : “ Working within the PTI ' s framework has allowed the St Edwards Geography department to develop a 21st century curriculum with an everyday geographies ethos . This has resulted in the development and delivery of innovative , diverse and most importantly memorable learning experiences across all Key Stages for all students . The department is an exciting place to learn and teach !”

It is crystal clear that the winning , highly commended and commended departments shortlisted are truly passionate and enthusiastic about their respective subjects , which drives everything they do . The work being done in these departments is truly inspiring and will change young people ’ s lives ”.
Professor Steve Munby CBE , Judge , said : “ This year the judges were impressed yet again by the skill , passion and powerful subject leadership shown by each department shortlisted . These dedicated departments have gone above and beyond to inspire and enthuse their students in their subject field and the results are phenomenal ”.
The £ 5,000 prize is used to advance the values of the PTI within the winner ’ s school , to fund release time and travel to visit other schools and disseminate the work which has been recognised by the Award . A trophy awarded to the winner was designed by award winning designer , Sophie Conran and will be passed onto future winners annually .
