the other reducing swelling on more favoured side . A cold compress may help reduce swelling and limit bruising .
The patient will have stitches and paper strips ( steristrips ) in place post operatively on the wound . I favour that the wounds are kept dry until the stitches and steristrips are removed 5-7 days following the operation . Chloramphenicol eye ointment will be dispensed and appropriate instructions given on discharge .
Some patients can experience bruising , which can last up to 2-3 weeks following the surgery . Arnica tablets may be of benefit in reducing the bruising ; however , in my experience over the last 18 years it has not always been consistently effective . Arnica cream may also be used to assist recovery from bruising following the surgery .
Some patients may experience red and watery eyes after the surgery . If this happens it is managed conservatively and is likely to improve within 3-4 weeks ; however , on rare occasions it may take up to 6 weeks . Other potential risks and complications could occur the most serious is blindness , which is very rare , reported in the literature as 1:2500 , which equates to 0.04 %. This , however , in nearly 20 years of practice as a consultant has not stopped any one from undergoing the surgery .
Upper eyelids blepharoplasty surgery as a procedure in the vast majority of patients gives excellent results and high patient satisfaction with low risk , and for the surgeon it is also a very enjoyable procedure to perform due to the delicateness of the surgery achieving high patient satisfaction .
