UNIVERSITY OF LIVERPOOL PROFESSOR CALLS ON THE PEOPLE OF MERSEYSIDE TO HELP BEAT CANCER THROUGH VIRTUAL CHALLENGES
A professor from the University of Liverpool , and a member of The Royal College of Pathologists , is inviting the people of Merseyside join in with her virtual challenges in a bid to raise money for Cancer Research UK .
Organised by Professor Sarah Coupland , Vice President for Communications at the Royal College of Pathologists , the # RCPath60 virtual challenges ( created in honour of the college ’ s 60th anniversary ) sees participants choose between virtually walking the Pembrokeshire Coastline ( 151.8 miles ), running Dublin to Londonderry ( 201.8 miles ) or cycling Land ’ s End to John o ’ Groats ( 845.7 miles ) between 1 March – 31 May .
Participants can sign up now to complete the challenges in their own way , in their own time , and are encouraged to raise money for vital cancer research in the process . The College has worked with Cancer Research UK to provide participants with fundraising materials and their own dedicated online fundraising page .
Professor Sarah Coupland said : “ As part of its Diamond Jubilee celebrations this year , the College of Pathologists wanted to partner with Cancer Research UK because the College understands its dedication in supporting fundamental cancer research and clinical trials , in attempts to improve cancer patient outcomes .
“ Pathologists like me diagnose cancer every day , and have had family members and / or friends affected by it . I am going to take part because I want to highlight what role pathologists have in making cancer diagnoses , and how closely pathologists and Cancer Researchers work together , in an effort to tackle cancer and discover new treatments .
“ This is just the beginning for the Royal College of Pathologists as it celebrates its Diamond Jubilee year . We have an exciting programme of events , including a physical Land ’ s End to John o ’ Groats challenge for cyclists in September , again , raising money for Cancer Research UK . The # RCPath60 virtual challenges would be the perfect practise for that .”
Chris Doyle , fundraising Relationship Manger for Cancer Research UK , said : “ We are absolutely delighted that the Royal College of Pathologists has decided to organise such a great challenge to raise money for Cancer Research UK .
“ It has been fantastic to work with Sarah to organise the virtual challenge . I ’ d like to thank her and the college for giving people the opportunity to join in with their celebrations and also play their own part in helping to beat cancer .
“ Cancer Research UK has made enormous progress in the fight against the disease . However , we have been hit hard by COVID-19 . Almost every way we raise money to fund our research was impacted by the pandemic , with our shops temporarily closed , and events cancelled .
“ One in two of us will get cancer in our lifetime . All of us can support the research that will beat it . It is thanks to the dedication and commitment volunteers and supporters , like the Royal College of Pathologists , that we are able to fund our life-saving research .”
