Merri Health backs Uluru Statement from the Heart

We ’ re proud to be supporting community members and staff to learn about the Uluru Statement and its components of Voice , Treaty and Truth ; including the establishment of a First Nations Voice in the constitution ( also known as a ‘ Voice to Parliament ’).
This is an important commitment in our Reconciliation Action Plan ( RAP ) 2022-23 to advance reconciliation and help close the health gap with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples .
Merri Health recognises that there are many different views and this may be a challenging time for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities .

What is the Uluru Statement from the Heart ?

The Uluru Statement from the Heart is an invitation to all Australians from First Nations people to walk together towards Voice , Treaty and Truth .
• Voice refers to a First Nations Voice in the Constitution .
• Treaty speaks to the process of agreement-making between First Nations peoples and governments .
• Truth asks us to talk openly about our shared history .

What is a First Nations Voice to Parliament ?

A First Nations Voice to Parliament would be a body that makes representations to the Australian Parliament and the Executive Government on legislation and policy of significance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples ; and give Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples a greater say on matters that affect them .

Referendum

A referendum will be held later this year that asks Australians to vote whether they agree to change the constitution to enshrine an Indigenous Voice to Parliament .
