One of our favorite aspects of small towns are historic theaters that remain a part of daily life . Brookhaven is no different . The Haven Theater — probably built before 1925 according to the Mississippi Department of Archives and History — saw the last of its Hollywood films long ago . Today , the theater , with its signature neon sign and Art Deco architecture , is home to the Brookhaven Little Theater , which was founded in 1968 . Through the years , the performers from this company have been entertaining locals and visitors alike with an array of musical and dramatic classics , as well as Broadway hits . Before a visit , make sure to check ahead to see if any performances are scheduled .
One of the more beautiful buildings in Brookhaven is the Temple B ’ nai Shalom , a former synagogue that now serves as the Lincoln County Historical and Genealogy Society . The congregation formed in 1894 , and the temple was built in 1896 and served as a temple until 2009 . The white clapboard building is notable for its Moorish Revival Horseshoe windows and truncated tower . The former temple is simply beautiful and is a must stop on a visit to Brookhaven . Not only will you find it interesting to explore the temple , but you will learn even more about Lincoln County and Brookhaven .
For those looking to explore Southern history and architecture , then walk just a block from downtown to South Jackson Street to the Historic Old Town neighborhood . Modeled after the Garden District in New Orleans , it is considered the most Victorian street in Mississippi . Take time to walk over to Jackson Street and take a self-guided tour of the stunning mansions and homes that decorate the street . It will leave you feeling as though you have stepped back in time to when life was a little simpler and time moved a little slower .
