Cedric “ CakeMan ” DuBose never had a desire to be a baker . In fact , he did not know how to bake . But , he took a leap of faith and , in turn , discovered a talent that brings him more joy than he could ever have imagined .
“ It all started when I was going through some emails one Saturday and happened upon the recipe for a red velvet cake ,” said DuBose , the owner and baker at CAM Cakes , LLC . “ I mentioned to my wife , Alicia , that I wanted to try my hand at making it . As I was calling out the ingredients she was continually taking things out of the pantry saying , ‘ Yeah , we got that .’ There was a couple of ingredients I wanted to add to the recipe , so off to the grocery store I went .”
DuBose said it was the ugliest cake he had ever seen . But , as time would tell , looks can be deceiving .
After his wife tasted it and liked it , he decided to take some to church on Sunday for others to try .
“ My mom , who is a great baker , asked me who made it ; I told her I did ,” he said . “ No one who tasted it that day believed I had made it . That gave me the inspiration I needed to make more cakes . Each time I would make one I would post it on FaceBook and say , ‘ Look what I did ; I made a cake .’ I would bake it and just give it out .
“ It wasn ’ t until a few months later that I realized it was a gift God had given me . I didn ’ t go to school for it . I didn ’ t sit under anyone to learn . It was just a God thing ,” he added .
“ I had no idea what doors that ugly cake was about to open .”
DuBose , who is an educator by day , decided he wanted to take the next step and open his own cake business .
