NOSTALGIA

Most people are familiar with the term Art Deco, but where does the term come from and what does it mean? Art Deco is an abbreviation that was derived from the exposition held in Paris, France, in 1925 that was known as the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes (International Exposition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts). The cubism and modernism movements began at the World’s Fair that was held in Paris in 1900, which was the predecessor to Art Deco.

DECO YOU

An Art Deco wedding gown should be simple in its design. It can be adorned with lace, beads or pearls; but the dress itself should be uncontrived. Think bias-cut silk charmeuse, crepe, or chiffon. A cowl in the front or back, or a halter or V-neckline would be appropriate. Micro-pleated satin a la Cleopatra would also be fabulous. Ivory or white would be the acceptable colors.

Black and white or black and ivory are the basics

along with metallic elements of either silver or gold. Interject a little blue, turquoise or green for an accent color. Feathers and metallic fans also look wonderful with Art Deco design elements.

Regarding makeup, remember that during the Art Deco era lipstick only came in three colors: red for brunettes; coral for red heads; pink for blondes. Rouge only came in red. Mascara and eyeliner only came in black, and eye shadow only came in brown, grey and black. The eyes should be defined as should the lips. Just a touch of rouge should do. Art Deco wedding makeup is not the same as flapper makeup and people often confuse the two. Brides of the era wanted to appear lovely and virginal. Flapper makeup was for party girls, not brides.

Hair should be worn up. Short hair should be styled in Marcel waves and long hair should be worn in a chignon or loose bob. Hair adornment is a must. The bridesmaids can wear rhinestone clips or head bands. The bride can wear a headpiece on top of her veil, pearls, or any number of hair accessories. For a perfect Art Deco wedding, hire a professional to assist with the details.
