NEWS Andrew Dike is the fifth generation of his family to run the much- loved store. Click Van Dike Seafood Sharing Platter Lunch every Sunday W hen it comes to food retail, independent North Dorset supermarket Dike & Son is “as good as [it] can get” according to the judges of the prestigious 2018 Retail Industry Awards. The family-run store and café in Stalbridge beat competition from across the country to pick up Independent Retailer of the Year (6000 sq ft and over). The organisers said it had edged ahead of a particularly impressive field this year by demonstrating “tremendous standards throughout” with “enthusiastic and engaging staff operating the business with passion”. The supermarket stocks produce from over 150 local suppliers, all under one roof. As the judges said: “It’s a store you would happily use as your store of choice. Their fresh foods are extensive and stunning – they shout, ‘Buy me’. The store is in a fairly remote rural location but excels at everything it does. This is as good as food retail can get.” Fifth generation family member and managing director Andrew Dike has also worked hard to develop an online presence with local delivery options. Andrew Dike said: “These awards are the result of a huge team effort – everyone works very hard to raise Dike & Son above the normal expectations of a supermarket visit. We are so delighted to win these awards. In today’s challenging retail environment it has given us a fantastic lift.” Visit www.dikes-direct.co.uk to see what’s on offer. Alright Jack Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum. Named after a smuggler and fit for a pirate. 16 D on’t know about you but as we head into winter we are in need of some serious cockle-warming. Enter Jack Ratt Lugger Rum, the winner of the drinks category at the 2018 Taste of the West Awards. Named after notorious local smuggler Jack Rattenbury, it’s a spiced rum with a complex taste from Lyme Bay Winery. As they say, “our Lugger Rum is not defined by an overpowering vanilla characteristic. Instead, our aim was to create a rum that offers a full profile of spices. As a result, we’ve aged Caribbean rum in bourbon-charred oak barrels… before spicing it with nutmeg, orange peel and cloves, as well as vanilla.” The results were good enough to pick up the prestigious award and also get the distinctive bottles stocked in more than 150 Waitroses across the UK.
