he restaurant entrepreneur behind
Koh Thai, Andy Lennox, is set to bring
a taste of Africa to Dorset with the launch of
his latest venture. Zim Braai restaurant and
bar will serve Southern African food in a site
at Ashley Cross, Parkstone in Poole when it
opens at the end of November.
The menu will draw on the rich, and largely
unfamiliar to British palettes, flavours of
Africa, taking in flame-grilled meat and fish
from the braai, aromatic stews and Malay
curries served in traditional cast iron ‘potjie’
dishes and fresh superfood salads. A visit
promises to be a delicious journey through the
culinary heritage of islands like the Seychelles,
Zanzibar and Madagascar as well as the
savannahs of Botswana, Zimbabwe and
South Africa.
The launch comes ten years after Andy
Lennox launched Koh, one of the most
successful Thai restaurant groups in the
South West.
Andy Lennox said: “This is an exciting new
chapter for me and I plan to launch several
restaurants across my home county Dorset,
which has a vibrant foodie scene. I will build
a new brand around Zim Braai. I won’t stop
at one restaurant. The boutique group will be
new, innovative and exciting. Southern Africa
offers diverse food and culture. Recipes use
time-honoured cooking methods. We plan
to open minds and tantalise taste-buds, with
our new food frontier - served with European
flair – and supported with exemplary customer
service, – in a truly spirited atmosphere.”
Zim Braai will be open for breakfast, lunch
and dinner and offer a tasting menu, small
bites, from the braai (grills and more), for
the potjie (stews and curries), salads, rice and
soups and will feature signature dishes from
across the region. Drinks will come from the
Oryx range and include own-label craft beer,
South African wine and specialist cocktails.
It sounds like this could do for authentic but
accessible Southern African food what Koh
did for Thai and we’re lucky that Dorset is
getting to try it first.
