t’s a brave TV chef who doesn’t make a point of championing ‘fresh, local produce’ as the secret of a winning
menu, but supermarket shoppers still find themselves scratching their heads at asparagus flown in from Kenya
and garlic from China, knowing full well that both grow just behind the village cow field. We’re clamouring for lower
food miles, and a handful of local producers are responding with a resurgence of farm shops, online stores and
Dorset delis stacked high with the best the county has to offer. As the phrase ‘taking back control’ becomes a mantra
in coming years, it will be the local producers who step up first with an alternative to imported goods that are low
on quality and high on tariffs. The good news is that this won’t involve the slightest compromise – it turns out our
blessed Dorset soil is packed with talent just waiting for the spotlight.
