After noon Tea
Summer Lodge
S
ummer Lodge is Dorset’s only five-star hotel and was voted
No. 1 hotel in the UK by Conde Nast Traveller in 2016.
That could be on account of the exemplary service, elegant
Grade II listed Georgian building or the four acres of mature
gardens surrounded by unspoiled countryside. Where else can
you take tea in a drawing room whose plans were drafted by
Dorset’s own Thomas Hardy, an architect by trade? Afternoon
tea is served from 3pm to 5.30pm weekdays, 4pm to 5.30pm
weekends, and includes cakes, freshly baked scones, Dorset
clotted cream, Dorset strawberry jam, tartlets, sandwiches and
tea for £29pp.
Best For: Service – Winner of the Excellence in Customer
Service Award at the 2016 Business Awards.

Clavell’s Café
I
t wasn’t hard to find a reason to visit Kimmeridge even before
Clavell’s Café opened in 2008. This stretch of coastline is
a walker’s paradise, after all. Few know it better, however
than the Clavell family, who have been farming on the Isle of
Purbeck since 1962. The cosy café makes a perfect stop on a
long hike, not least because of its large outdoor seating area.
Order the Clavell’s Cream Tea (£6.95), with two homemade
scones, strawberry jam, Dorset clotted cream and a pot of tea.
You can also pick up a slice or two of warm Dorset Apple Cake
on the side. Not surprisingly, the accolades have followed. The
café won 2013 Best Tea Room and a 2014 Gold in the Taste of
Dorset Awards.
Best For: Escaping the madding crowd on a fresh Dorset
afternoon in autumn.
