As soon as the big hand reaches
four, fingers across the county turn
to the serious business of slathering
cream and strawberry jam on
scones. Nick Marshall selects some
of the best Cream Teas in Dorset…
lthough the country no longer grinds to a halt every day
at 4pm, much to the dismay of visiting American tourists,
the practise of taking afternoon tea dates back to the
Duchess of Bedford in 1840, and was subsequently adopted
with a passion by society ladies in full tea-drinking garb.
Traditional afternoon tea, however, is still alive and
brewing in Dorset. The pace of life and long, lazy summer
afternoons are conducive to settling down to a tiered
display of scones, clotted cream, and preserves alongside
cakes, finger sandwiches and the obligatory pot of India
or Ceylon tea. Let the battle rage between Devon and
Cornwall over which is the authentic way to serve a Cream
Tea. We just know that there’s a ‘T’ in Dorset for a reason.
