How to open Oysters
Oysters are a great starter for
a romantic meal, but you could
ruin the atmosphere if you’re
struggling with a shucking knife.
Here’s how to open them. Hold
the oyster firmly with a tea towel
in one hand, place the tip of the
shucking knife in the hinge and
lever it up. Slide the knife in and
prise it open.
How to use up kale
Got some kale hanging around in
the veg box? Here are five ways
to use it up.
1. Kale crisps: Drizzle kale
leaves with olive oil, season with
salt and pepper and bake in the
oven at 150c.
2. Risotto: Add stir-fried kale
and streaky bacon to a risotto.
3. Stir-fry: Fry in a wok with
garlic and chilli for a tasty side
dish for chicken.
4. Stew: Make a hearty sausage
stew with kale, onions, chicken
stock and white beans or
pearl barley.
5. With fish: Simply boil some
kale for 3-4 minutes, drain, toss
with butter and serve alongside
salmon and buttery potatoes.

Parsnips
Parsnips go out of season next month so make sure
they’re part of your roast dinner now. Or make a
soup flavoured with ginger.
Swede
It might be a little old fashioned but you can’t beat
mashed swede and carrot with lots of pepper and
butter.
