HOW TO SUPPORT YOUR PARTNER THROUGH DEPRESSION
Depression is a mental disorder that affects 1 in 10 men across the UK . Despite this statistic , only 9 % of those men receive treatment for their illness . Mental health is a difficult subject to discuss , even with the people closest to you . Here are four ways you can support your partner through depression .
1 . Educate yourself
Depression , like many disorders , is a spectrum . Its symptoms can range from loss of interest to self-harm . A common misconception people have is that they assume those who suffer are sad all the time . This is false . People with depression can experience good days as well as bad days . It ’ s important to educate yourself on this kind of information as it allows you to be aware of the different forms depression can take .
2 . Be patient and reassure your partner
It ’ s no secret that mental health is a difficult subject to talk about . Many people , especially men , feel ashamed to admit their feelings . A statistic from the Priory Group revealed that 40 % of men do not share their emotions due to feeling ashamed . The few that do open up only do so to their significant other .
Getting your partner to disclose their feelings is a difficult feat , but the best thing that you can do as a partner is to reassure them that they are safe and that you love them . It may take months or years to fully disclose their feelings to you but you must remain patient and empathetic towards them . Remind them how loved they are , and share anecdotes of happy memories you two have together .
3 . Advise treatment ( but don ’ t push !)
After reassuring your partner , the next step is to get them treatment . Therapy or medication are the two treatments that people normally go for . Gently nudge your partner into the thought of getting treatment and offer your hand for support .
