Be selective of who you follow – Only follow what you enjoy .
Consider limiting the number of people you follow . Justice , a student who works part time as a copywriter , has mentioned that he deleted Instagram because he would frequently receive content on his feed that he was not interested in . Consider unfollowing or muting accounts that don ’ t show you content that you enjoy or that just take up space on your feed .
Limit the time you spend scrolling – Set time limits .
It can be addicting to scroll through social media platforms like TikTok , Instagram reels , and YouTube shorts because you can simply swipe at the screen for new content . That ’ s why setting a timer for a few minutes , or limiting your average time on social media a day can help you stop spending hours on one app . You can even try planning your day out in advance to be more productive .
Avoid comparing yourself to others – Try to link .
Comparing yourself to someone else is like comparing apples to oranges . Though they are both fruit , they are completely different and cannot be compared . As mentioned before , you can feel envy towards someone who has put their seemingly better life on display . However , changing your mindset from envy to inspiration would benefit your mental health a lot more . Don ’ t compare yourself to others considering your circumstances are different . Instead , you can motivate yourself by setting attainable goals . Ones that do not harm your mental health and instead makes you feel better as a person .
Don ’ t struggle alone .
If you do struggle with depression , anxiety or harmful thoughts , and use social media as a form of escapism , you should talk to someone who may be able to help . Whether that is a friend you made through social media or a trusted family member . Though we encourage you that you seek help from people IRL , it is no surprise that most find it easier to speak to people online . This is due to the privacy and anonymity social media provides . Either way , social media does more harm than good especially to someone with a vulnerable mindset . That is why talking to someone whether that is online or in person about your problems would help you more than suffering in silence .
