Men ’ s Group Network - A place to belong
Since Covid19 many men have experienced worse cases of mental health issues following the lockdowns and isolation periods . An article from BMJ Global Journals states that 36.8 % of men reported feelings of depression . Though that is the number reported , it can be estimated that many more who suffer from mental disorders are keeping quiet . There are many charities that have taken into consideration the isolation and mental stress men have endured since before and during the pandemic . The Men ’ s Group Network ( also known as MGN ) is one of many organisations created to help men improve their mental state . However , the methods seem a little different from other charities .
Sol Wilder founded the Men ’ s Group Network in 2021 , when the rate of men ’ s suicide and mental health issues increased . He looked at online forums that expressed how much they were looking for a true sense of community and decided he would create one . As an American , the group was
founded in the US , however , the non-profit organisation is aimed towards anyone who needs it considering the website is made for people around the world to connect . Wilder mentions during our interview that the aim is to connect men who are looking for similar things , whether that is companionship , emotional intimacy , or a place to “ self-reflect , heal or have fun .”
The unique aspect about the Men ’ s Group Network is the micro communities that are introduced in the first session . The program lasts for 8 weeks and during that time you ’ ll be with your own micro group where you can talk , share your emotions without being judged , but also listen to what others have to say . Since it is common for men to hold in their worries and feelings , Wilder wanted to give individuals who are silent an opportunity to speak out . This is helpful for the individuals , not just because they ’ ll be able to voice their emotions , but also , according to an article by Richard Traum , what “ micro-communities share is their ability to empower others , to confront their fears , set new goals , and forge paths they may not have pursued alone .”
There are many people who find these micro-communities helpful , including Chuck who had been a member of the organisation since it was founded . He described his group as a “ circle of confidants ” that supported him through the pandemic , and still help him now . During the interview , Chuck recommended MGN more than therapy not just for financial reasons . He described the group as “ therapy for those less than wealthy ”. He also mentioned that it becomes harder making friends when growing up . As he sees the group as his friends it makes it easier to open up to them , and equally listen to them , especially when everyone in the group is facing similar issues to him .
“ Our mission is to create more In Person , Virtual & Community spaces to facilitate True Community & meaningful connection through training , mentoring & support .”
