MIDSEASON REPORT
The Sabres closed out the month of December as one of the hottest teams in the NACC,
finishing 2013 in a tie for first place despite their 106-101 loss to Aurora on the road Dec.
20. Marian has proven time and again that it can battle back from large deficits like it did
against Luther, UW-Eau Claire and Aurora. However, the challenge has been getting to
teams early and earning the sizeable lead as opposed to playing from behind.
Seniors Cody Veleke and Sam Koslowski have worn their proverbial captain’s
armbands with pride – not only leading the team off the floor, but serving as floor generals
by example on it. Koslowski leads the team in scoring with a career-high 16.2 ppg, followed
by Veleke at 14.4. Veleke and senior Jeff Harris both eclipsed 1,000 career points this
season, becoming the 15th and 16th members at Marian all-time. Koslowski, who is just 145
points away, or 10.4 points per game over the team’s final 10 regular season games, should
also reach.
Sophomore Drew Binversie has followed up his NACC All-Freshman Team campaign
nicely, hitting the New Year with a solid 9.2 ppg, but will look to improve his 38.6 field goal
percentage moving forward. Fellow All-Freshman Team selection from last season, Alex
Stecker – who started all 26 games a year ago – played nine minutes in the loss to Aurora,
his first regular season action since coming off a leg injury. Senior Elan Solvik showed to
be more than serviceable in Stecker’s absence, recording 8.7 points and 5.0 rebounds per
game in 10 starts.
The Sabres not only have one of the deepest benches in the league, they also have
one of the better rebounding teams in the NACC. Marian ranks third in the league in
rebounding margin at +5.6 per game in conference play and are 5-0 when outrebounding
their opponents this season. There’s a long way to go with 14 games remaining, including
13 against NACC opponents, six of those at home, but the Sabres have the edge with a 6-1
league mark, tying them for first place.
LAST TIME OUT
Marian, aiming for a 7-0 start for the first time since 1989-90, fell just short in a 106-101
shootout at Aurora University Friday, Dec. 20. Trailing by 17 points with just 7:23 remaining
in the game, all seemed lost until the final four minutes of the game when Marian was able
to cut it to single digits. Then, trailing 99-90 with 90 seconds left, Sam Koslowski scored
six straight points followed by a Drew Binversie three-point play and Marian trailed by
just one, 100-99, with 33 seconds left on the clock.
The Spartans would hit all six of their free throw attempts down the stretch to seal the
hard-fought victory. Both teams shot better than 56 percent from the field with Spartans
turning in a remarkable 61.7 percent clip from the floor. Koslowski netted a team-high 24
points, while Binversie added 20 and 13 apiece from both Cody Veleke and Josh Creed.
The loss dropped the Sabres into a first-place tie with Aurora.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
Benedictine University, picked to finish fifth in the NACC Preseason Coaches’ and SIDs’
Poll, is currently sitting in an unsatisfied ninth place with a 2-4 league mark to go along
with a 4-7 overall record. Three of their four losses in conference play have been by three
points or less with two of those being on the road against Aurora and Lakeland and the
most recent coming at the hands of MSOE at home. The Eagles rank first in conference play
in rebounding margin (+7.5) and second in field goal percentage (48.3).
Junior forward Tim McGinty leads four Eagles averaging in double figures with 15.7
points per game and a team-best 6.7 rebounds per contest. Freshman Michael Blaszczyk
comes in at 13.5 ppg followed by freshman Tahron Harvey and junior Michael Woolf at 12.5
and 12 ppg, respectively.
