The Sabres led by 20 at halftime and increased the advantage to as many as 22 points on the way to a rout. Senior guard Jeff Harris became the 16th member of the 1,000-point club at Marian with 13 points off the bench, joining Cody Veleke, who accomplished the milestone earlier back on Dec. 5. Sam Koslowski turned in a game-high 17 points as he led three in double figures and a 51 percent shooting effort from the field. Marian turned 19 CUC turnovers into 25 points, including a 20-2 advantage in the first half. The win gave the Sabres 5-0 record at home and a one-game cushion in the conference standings, ahead of 5-1 Aurora.. SCOUTING THE SPARTANS Aurora University might be the second-hottest team in the NACC with an 8-3 overall record and a 5-1 mark in conference play entering Friday night’s contest against the Sabres. The Spartans, who were picked as the NACC preseason favorite with 12-of-22 first-place votes in the preseason poll, suffered their lone league setback at the hands of Rockford University back on Dec. 5, dropping a narrow 75-69 decision on the road. They have won four straight games since with the last two coming on the road at Edgewood and Maranatha Baptist. Aurora leads the league in several statistics, including field goals made (30.1) and attempted (67.3) per game, assists (17.3) per game, fewest turnovers (12.0) per game, blocks (4.8) per game and opponents’ field goal percentage (40.4). One area they have struggled in so far has been keeping opponents off the glass as their rebound margin is a league-worst (-4.3) and worse-yet in conference games (-5.0). Sophomore Tyler Hall leads the Spartans at 15.4 points per game and leads the league with 4.6 assists per contest. Senior Scott Laskowski is second on the squad at 14.1 ppg, followed by Kalmon Stokes and Brandon Smith at 13.5 and 10.6 ppg, respectively. Laskowski adds a team-best 7.6 rebounds, while Stokes is right behind at seven caroms per game. SERIES HISTORY The Sabres and Spartans will meet for the 11th time in the all-time series, with Aurora holding the 7-3 edge heading into Friday night. Marian snapped a four-game losing skid to Aurora with a 76-70 win at home in their last meeting back on Jan. 19, 2013. TWO SABRES ECLIPSE 1,000-POINT PLATEAU Senior forward Cody Veleke and senior guard Jeff Harris reached a milestone only 14 Sabres had before then. Veleke, who dons the #15 became the 15th member of the 1,000-point club when he led the Sabres with 24 points and 11 rebounds in an 84-82 overtime victory at Wisconsin Lutheran on Dec. 5. It was his seventh career double-double. Harris eclipsed the milestone just before halftime of a 76-61 victory over Concordia Chicago at home Saturday, Dec. 14. Fellow senior Sam Koslowski is just 169 points away from becoming the third Sabre this year to reach the mark. He needs to average just 11.3 points per game in the final 15 regular season games. If he does, Marian will have done what only three known teams have accomplished since the 1996-97 season by having three or more players reach the coveted milestone in the same year. THE KEY TO VICTORY Marian is 5-0 this season when out-rebounding its opponents and holds a +6.2 margin on the year. In those wins, the Sabres are +67 on the glass combined compared to -18 on the short-end. Last season, the Sabres went 10-3 when out-rebounding their opponents and finished the year with a -0.7 rebound margin.
