@MarianUHoops BASKETBALL NOTES
LAST TIME OUT
The Sabres got off to a good start in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play with
a 71-63 home win over visiting Dominican University in the league opener last Saturday,
Dec. 2. Cody Veleke scored 15 of his game-high 20 points in the second half to lead the
Sabres.
Marian took a 33-27 lead into the break and totaled 17 second-chance points to just four
for the Stars. The Sabres held a 45-23 rebounding edge and sealed the win with a 16-for-20
effort at the free throw line.
Sam Koslowski added 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting, while Montrell Hobbs chipped
in career-highs with 11 points, a team-high eight rebounds and four assists in 21 minutes off
the bench.
EXPLORING THE RAIDERS
Milwaukee School of Engineering comes into Tuesday with a 3-0 record overall, including a
1-0 mark in the NACC after handing Rockford their first loss of the season with a 77-70 road
win in the league opener last Saturday. The Raiders currently lead the NACC in field goal
percentage (52.8), made three’s per game (7.7), rebound margin (+9.3), scoring defense
(62.3) and field goal percentage defense (42.4).
Austin Stueck leads four Raiders averaging in double figures through three games this
season. Stueck’s 18 points per game comes on 47.4 percent shooting and an average of
three made three’s per game. Jeremiah Erdmann, Connor Patterson and Nathan Verdun
are all averaging over 11 points per game, while Patterson leads MSOE with 7.3 rebounds
per contest. The lone Raider not averaging double figures is John Cording, who is turning
in a team-best 4.7 assists per game.
SERIES HISTORY
The Sabres and Raiders will meet for the 49th time in the all-time series. Marian currently
leads the series with a record of 35-13 and has won two straight meetings, both occuring
last season with a 55-51 win on the road, Dec. 5, and a 59-47 win at home, Jan. 23.
Previously, MSOE had put together a stretch of five wins in seven meetings dating back
to the 2006-07 season.
GRAND OPENING
Marian is looking to snap a five-game losing streak in conference openers and a threegame skid in conference home openers when it hosts Dominican Saturday. The last win
in a conference opener came all the way back on Nov. 28, 2007 when the Sabres went to
River Forest and beat Concordia Chicago, 70-66.
The most recent win in a conference home opener was back on Dec. 5, 2009 when the
Sabres beat Dominican, 81-68, behind 31 points from Logan Rankin (‘10).
RACE TO 1K
Seniors Cody Veleke (972) and Jeff Harris (967) are within five career points of each other
entering Tuesday’s game against MSOE. Should they stay within their career averages of
11.9 and 12.2, respectively, then there would be the rarity of both players eclipsing 1,000
points during Saturday’s game at Rockford.
