The Sabres battled back from 17 points down against Luther in the tournament opener Friday, Nov. 22, but they couldn’t finish the comeback, falling 71-69. On Saturday, the Sabres fell to UW-Eau Claire, 81-79. Marian put four players in double figures in both instances, including sophomore Drew Binversie, who registered his second career double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds in the setback to UW-Eau Claire. Senior Sam Koslowski averaged a team-best 15.3 points per game last week, while senior Cody Veleke registered 14.7 points and 4.7 rebounds. GAZING AT THE STARS Dominican University comes into Saturday reeling after dropping its first four contests this year, including the previous two by double digits. The Stars were picked to finish seventh in the NACC Preseason Poll after going 10-17 overall, including 7-9 in the conference last season. Senior Taylor DeRoo leads the Stars this season with 17 points per game. He scored a season-high 26 in a 94-88 loss at Lake Forest in the season opener. Sophomore Ryan Risley and senior Logan Harris follow closely behind with 13.3 and 12.2 points per game, respectively. Harris also hauls in a team-high 5.8 rebounds per game. SERIES HISTORY The Sabres and Stars will meet for the 17th time this Saturday. Marian leads the all-time series 9-7, and has won three of the last five meetings. The last meeting between both teams saw the Stars turn in an improbable victory at home when they overcame a 22-point deficit and outscored the Sabres 46-26 in the second half for a 65-64 win back on Dec. 1, 2012. Dominican’s go-ahead score with nine seconds remaining marked its first and only lead of the game. Two of the last three home meetings for Marian has resulted in 13-point victories over the Stars. LEAGUE OPENERS Marian is looking to snap a five-game losing streak in conference openers and a threegame skid in conference home openers when it hosts Dominican Saturday. The last win in a conference opener came all the way back on Nov. 28, 2007 when the Sabres went to River Forest and beat Concordia Chicago, 70-66. The most recent win in a conference home opener was back on Dec. 5, 2009 when the Sabres beat Dominican, 81-68, behind 31 points from Logan Rankin (‘10). FOR THE 41ST TIME Marian University men’s basketball opened its 41st season in program history when it opened up with 79-70 home win over Martin Luther College, Nov. 16. Men’s basketball played its first season at Marian back in 1972-73. WHAT IT REALLY “BOYLES” DOWN TO Head Coach Mark Boyle, who is in his 26th season at the helm of the Marian University men’s basketball program has compiled 325 career victories on the Sabre sidelines. The Madison native took over the program for his first season in 1988-89 and led the team to a Lake Michigan Conference tournament championship. He arrived in Fond du Lac by way of UW-Green Bay, where he served as assistant under legendary coach Dick Bennett for three seasons. Boyle graduated from UW-Eau Claire. Boyle is currently the longest-tenured college coach in the state of Wisconsin.
