MARIAN MEN’S BASKETBALL NOTES
LAST TIME OUT
Marian University men’s basketball team took a 37-21 lead
into halftime on the way to a 79-70 victory in the season and
home opener against non-conference foe, Martin Luther, of
the UMAC.
Sam Koslowski contributed a team-high 19 points on
6-of-9 shooting, while Cody Veleke scored 14 and hauled
in eight rebounds to lead Marian to a 1-0 record to start the
year. Jeff Harris turned in 14 points off the bench as well,
and Drew Binversie added 12 points.
The Sabres outrebounded the Knights, 49-36, and
outscored them 40-8 in the paint and 28-11 off the bench.
HAWKING RIPON
Ripon College comes in at 1-1 after splitting two games at the
Illinois Wesleyan tournament. The Red Hawks dropped the
season opener to Aurora 83-75 followed by an 83-73 victory
over Manchester (Ind.).
The Red Hawks return nine letterwinners, including two
starters and were picked to finish ninth in the Midwest
Conference Preseason Poll. Ripon has four players averaging
in double figures through two games with Kyle Loughrin and
Ty Sabin leading the way at 18 points per game apiece.
Ripon is allowing opponents to shoot 51.7 percent,
including 42.4 percent (14-for-33) from three-point range
through two games.
COURSING THROUGH THE NORSE
Luther College of the Iowa Conference hails from Decorah,
Iowa. The Norse, who open the season at home on the 19th
against UW-La Crosse, return nine letterwinners, including
three starters from a squad that was co-IIAC regular season
champs in 2013 after an 18-8 overall mark, 11-3 in the league.
Senior forward John Androus leads the Norse after
winning IIAC Defensive Player of the Year honors a year ago.
Michael Crocker returns as the team’s leading scorer after
averaging 9.2 points in 26 starts last year.
Head Coach Mark Franzen is in his eighth year at Luther
and holds an 85-93 career record.
SCOUTING THE BLUGOLDS
UW-Eau Claire of the WIAC entered the week with a 1-0
record after a 70-66 victory over Hamline back on Saturday.
The Blugolds overcame a six-point first half deficit thanks to
Lewis Mau and Adam Hjelter, who fueled the comeback with
26 second-half points combined. They finished with 20 and 22
points, respectively, in the win.
Mau leads four returning letterwinners and is the lone
starter and All-WIAC returner after earning honorable
mention accolades a season ago. The Blugolds were picked
to finish eighth in the WIAC Preseason Poll after a 10-15
finish a year ago, including a 4-12 mark in conference play.
Matt Siverling enters his second season at the helm and
fourth overall. He entered the year with a career 39-39 mark.
GAMES 2-4: RIPON/BETHEL TOURNEY
REVIEWING THE ROYALS
Bethel University entered the year under a first-year head
coach in Doug Novak and opened with a road game at UWStout on Tuesday. The Royals are coming off a 15-11 record
in 2012-13, including a fifth-place 11-9 mark in the MIAC.
Kyle Zimmerman highlights a list of three returning
seniors looking to fill the void after the departure of NABC
All-American Taylor Hall to graduation. Zimmerman was
an All-MIAC selection in his own right after averaging 13.8
points and 8.5 rebounds per game in 2012-13.
SERIES HISTORY
The Sabres trail the all-time series against the Red Hawks, 143. However, Marian defeated Ripon in their last meeting back
on Nov. 24, 2012 with a 76-74 win in Fond du Lac. Previously,
Ripon had won four straight dating back to 2006-07.
UW-Eau Claire holds a 3-0 lead in the all-time series. The
last time both teams met was back on Dec. 28, 2007 and the
Blugolds came away with a 79-78 overtime win at home.
Marian has never met Luther or Bethel.
SEASON LID-LIFTERS
Marian snapped a three-game losing streak in season
openers with a 79-70 win over Martin Luther last Saturday,
Nov. 16. Last year, the Sabres fell to 2012-13 NAIA national
runner-up William Penn at the Moody Bible Invitational. The
Sabres previously won a season opener back on Nov. 15,
2009 when they defeated Beloit College at home, 78-57.
FOR THE 41ST TIME

first season at Marian back in 1972-73.
WHAT IT REALLY “BOYLES” DOWN TO
Head Coach Mark Boyle, who enters his 26th season at the

seaso n in 1988-89 and led the team to a Lake Michigan
