@MarianUHoops BASKETBALL NOTES
LAST TIME OUT
The Sabres increased its lead in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, while
completing their second three-game weekly sweep with wins over rivals Concordia
Wisconsin and Lakeland, followed by a victory at Benedictine last week. On Monday, the
Sabres took care of Northland International on the road. Albeit, needing overtime.
Jeff Harris had a banner week, averaging 15.7 ppg before turning in a 21-point effort
against NIU to lead the Sabres to six straight wins. Drew Binversie was instrumental as
well, adding nearly 11 ppg to go along with 4.5 rebounds.
Marian was in control from start to finish in wins over CUW and Lakeland, while showing
it could comeback and an adverse situation against Benedictine. The Sabres trailed for the
majority of the contest and was led by Harris’ 29 points in a late-second-half comeback.
In the win Monday night, the Sabres led by 18 points with over five minutes left before the
Pioneers made an 18-0 run to send it to overtime. The Sabres then outscored them 14-5 in
the extra session to avoid the scare. Harris poured in a game-high 23 points.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
Edgewood College is off to a 9-6 overall mark, including a 7-3 start in NACC play after
winning its last three contests. The Eagles are 6-2 at home this season with wins in their
last two home games, which were single digit victories against Concordia Chicago and
Wisconsin Lutheran. Edgewood is third in the conference, averaging just 12.7 turnovers per
game. They attempt the third-most three’s (20.4) of any team in the NACC, but convert just
29.1 percent of those, which ranks 10th. Their +6.0 rebounding marging in conference play
ranks atop the league, thanks in part to their 14.4 offensive rebounds per game.
Joe Klocek leads three Eagles averaging in double figures this season with 11.1 points
per game to go along with 5.1 rebounds. Justin Williams has chipped in 11 points and
7.8 rebounds per game this year and has three double-doubles this season, including a
15-point, 19-rebound effort in an 80-72 win at Dominican back on Jan. 7. Dylan Rusch adds
10.5 points and 1.9 assists per game.
SERIES HISTORY
The Sabres and Eagles will meet for the 55th time in the series on Wednesday night.
Edgewood hold the all-time edge, 32-22, but Marian has won the last four meetings dating
back to the second meeting of 2011-12. The Sabres swept the season series from the
Eagles a season ago and will be eyeing its third straight win in the Edgedome.
In their last meeting back on Dec. 11, the Sabres shot nearly 60 percent in the first half to
take a 42-22 advantage into the break and led by as many as 24 points in the contest. Cody
Veleke led a balanced effort with a game-high 13 points as the Sabres went on to a 72-60
victory inside Sadoff Gymnasium in Fond du Lac.
OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION
The Sabres scored 80 or more points in three consecutive games between Dec. 20, 2013Jan. 11, 2014, going 2-1 in that span. After falling to Aurora, 106-101, Marian rebounded with
an 82-74 win over Benedictine (Jan. 4) and an 83-70 victory over Rockford (Jan. 11).
It marked the first time the Sabres scored 80 or more points in three straight games since
Dec. 4-16, 2007. In those three games, Marian defeated Lakeland, Concordia Wisconsin
and Wisconsin Lutheran - all at home - on the way to a 15-11 overall record, including an
11-6 mark in conference play.
So far this season, Marian has eclipsed 80 points six times and is averaging 77 ppg
through 17 games. It’s the most a Marian team has averaged in a season since the 2007-08
season when the Sabres averaged 74.1 ppg and is 6.3 points more than last year’s squad.
