National Ave. • Fond du Lac, WI • 54935 LAST TIME OUT The Sabres improved to 8-4 overall, 7-1 in the NACC with an 82-74 victory over Benedictine last Saturday, Jan. 4, thanks in large part to senior Sam Koslowski’s 32 points on 10-of-13 shooting, including 8-for-10 from downtown. Marian shot 56 percent from the field and went 10-for-17 from three-point range. It took a 51-36 lead into halftime and never looked back. Josh Creed contributed 11 points and eight rebounds off the bench, while Cody Veleke, Alex Stecker and Drew Binversie each chipped in nine points in the winning effort. SERIES HISTORY The Sabres and Regents have met 17 times previously with Rockford holding the slight, 9-8, edge all-time. Marian is going for three straight victories in the series after a 78-70 victory at the Seager Center in Rockford back on Dec. 7. The Sabres used a 24-5 first-half run to take a 38-25 lead into the break. The Sabres were led by Elan Solvik’s 22 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including 10-for-14 from the foul line. Cody Veleke and Sam Koslowski each added 14 points. Marian outrebounded Rockford, 45-39, with Montrell Hobbs leading the way with 11 rebounds in 22 minutes off the bench. OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION The Sabres went into the holiday break coming off a difficult, 106-101, loss to host Aurora back on Dec. 20, but had plenty to build on offensively. Despite the 15-day layoff, Marian showed little rust, putting up 51 points in the first half in a win against Benedictine Jan. 4. Adding a 56-point second half against Aurora to a 51-point first half against Benedictine, the Sabres scored 107 points in a 40-minute span, which is believed to be a school record. The Sabres have registered back-to-back performances of 56 percent or more from the field for the first time since 2012. Marian shot 56.7 percent (34-for-60) in the win over Aurora, followed by a 56 percent (28-for-50) effort in Saturday’s win against Benedictine. MAGIC NUMBERS When the Sabres score 70 or more points in a game this season they are 7-2. Since the beginning of the 2012-13 season, Marian is 18-4 in games it has scored 70 points or more. Since last season, the Sabres are 17-2 when tied or leading at halftime, including 6-0 this season. ON THE HORIZON The Sabres face possibly their most difficult stretch of the season with a three-game week against the likes of Concordia Wisconsin (Jan. 14), Lakeland (Jan. 16) and Benedictine (Jan. 18). Marian plays host to the Muskies, while hitting the road to take on the Falcons and Eagles.
