„MŌJ ŌPA TYŻ BOŁ DEPORTUWANY”
(MY GRANDFATHER WAS ALSO DEPORTED). COMMEMORATING
THE 80TH ANNIVERSARY
OF THE UPPER SILESIAN TRAGEDY
Documentation Centre for Deportations of Upper Silesians to the USSR in 1945
This exhibition aims to commemorate and disseminate knowledge of
a significant and traumatic period in Upper Silesian history, regionally known as the Upper Silesian Tragedy. Sadly, the subject lacks widespread recognition in both national public discourse and the regional historiography of the 20th century.
For nearly a decade, the Documentation Centre for the Deportation of Upper Silesians to the USSR in 1945 has meticulously chronicled this historical event. The repression was so extensive that even today, historical accounts frequently cite a phrase emblematic of this tragedy: “Mōj Ōpa tyż boł deportuwany” (“My grandfather was also deported,”with “opa” signifying grandfather in Silesian). The authors of the exhibition wish to preserve the historical experience of our grandparents' generation.
