Getting around
Barbuda
To do some sightseeing, you can hire one of the taxis
that will be at the terminal when the ferry comes
into port. They are all friendly locals who will be
pleased to show you around their island.
Barbuda is safe and you can also explore on your
own. Visit the Tourism Office, located close to the
Fisheries Complex in Codrington Village and they
will be happy to assist.
Codrington
Village
Codrington is historically significant.
During 1684-1870, the island of
Barbuda was leased from England
by the Codrington family of
Gloucester. The area in which their
settlement was located still bears
their name.
The Codrington family owned
plantations in Antigua. Barbuda
was important to them as the island
was used to supply essentials to
plantations in Antigua, including
their own. Cattle, horses, sheep,
goat, pigs, deer, turtles, among
others were sent to Antigua.
The family also benefitted when
ships wrecked off the island
because they would be entitled to
receive a portion of whatever was
salvaged from the wreck. Most
importantly, though was the fact
that the Codringtons were slaveowners
and in addition to livestock
and provisions, slaves were also
exported, adding to the family’s
profitability.
Codrington was the hub of all
economic and residential activity
during the colonial period, and
modern-day Codrington still
remains the only village on this
small island.
