SEAMLESS SUPPLY CHAIN
Our team were set the challenge by Harvard Healthcare to design an orthopaedic screwdriver that can hold onto screws, without dropping either on the operating theatre floor, or even in a patient.
The application of our group’ s aerospace and High Value Manufacturing expertise enabled us to deliver a unique solution, inventing a device that has led to a global patent application.
Developed through an efficient prototyping and testing regime, we employed innovative materials and manufacturing processes that enabled a brilliant design solution that could hold a wide range of screw sizes- smaller than any self-holding screwdrivers available, easier to sterilise, and compliant with the relevant ISO standards.
We worked with medical device manufacturer Sheffield Precision Medical( SPM) and our existing relationship aided a seamless transition through the supply chain, ensuring that the best solution was produced. Our team guided the transition from proof-of principle to preproduction prototype in-house, then to production prototype at SPM ensuring quality, function and design intent were all maintained. The final product produced by SPM was excellent, beautifully machined and produced to-schedule to the all the required tolerances.
The Medical AMRC is a new group dedicated to applying innovative design and manufacturing to the healthcare sector.

NOCRI AND MEDILINK FUNDING AND RESEARCH EVENT‘ A GREAT SUCCESS’
An event offering healthcare organisations with advice on accessing funding and research has been hailed as a great success.
Held in Leeds, the free roadshow was hosted by The National Institute for Health Research( NIHR) Office for Clinical Research Infrastructure( NOCRI) in partnership with Medilink.
Targeting Yorkshire and Humber organisations, the event explained how to gain access to funding, leading science, world-class facilities, experts and access to patients to support the development and market adoption of technology.
Chennakesavalu Rajagopal, Affotek Director and event delegate, said:“ The event offered a beneficial insight into the means for accessing funding and expert research, both of which are invaluable for a small business such as mine. The event was a great success and it was excellent to see so many other Yorkshire healthcare businesses in attendance.”
