SME CASE STUDY: PAXMAN
Paxman is a well-established business based in
Yorkshire since 1997 and has seen significant growth
since 2009.
Prior to 2009 the business exported to a small number
of markets, with the Netherlands and Scandinavia being
the main focus. The support of major UK charity Walk
the Walk enabled the business to fully develop in the UK
market but it became obvious there could not be a sole
reliance on the NHS for sustainable business growth
By 2009 Paxman had strong supporting clinical data,
and excellent support from a scalp cooling research
group in the Netherlands. There were also a number of
established reference centres using the Paxman scalp
cooling equipment. This set a good foundation for the
company to launch its product on an international level.
A change in direction and a continued passion for helping
cancer patients gave the business a new focus, building
on its existing export markets and with the help of
Medilink and UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) exhibited at
international medical trade shows such as Medica,
Arab Health and Hospitalar which built a number of
global networks.
Paxman’s current major focus areas for growth are in the
USA and Japan and the company has had much interest
from world-leading oncology centres, key opinion leaders
and institutes around the world.
Since 2009 the business has seen a 20% year on year
growth and has doubled its workforce. The launch of the
third generation of Paxman scalp coolers was launched
in 2010 and the company is currently in the midst
of a £600,000 R&D project for the improvement of
the current device to ensure the launch of further
ground-breaking scalp cooling technology which is
made in Britain.
Paxman is currently undergoing clinical trials
in the US with researchers from
the Lester and Sue Smith Breast
Center at Baylor College
of Medicine.
