The Heian Period is considered the Golden Age of Japan because of the enormous cultural progression and great literature and art. One of the more important works during this time period is The Tale of Genji. It is often used to find out what life and culture was like during this time period. It makes many references to narrative paintings which are paintings that tell a story. It is made up of alternating parts of paintings and text. The Tale of Genji is also renowned for allowing the reader to have maximum imaginative freedom.
