Adult pneumococcal vaccination in SA
A report was recently undertaken by consultant company Frost and Sullivan to understand the adult
vaccination market dynamics in SA. It focused on perceptions of healthcare professionals and key
opinion leaders towards adult pneumococcal vaccination. Medical Chronicle interviewed Mani James,
Operations Manager - Africa, Frost & Sullivan, to find out more.

recommending of pneumococcal

What campaigns do you suggest?
This can be rectified by targeting very
specific user groups and the leveraging
of Prevenar 13® (paediatric brand).
Prevenar 13 is regarded as being
efficacious against pneumococcal
diseases in the paediatric population
and there is high brand awareness
among healthcare professionals.
This should be leveraged more in the
campaign. The key opinion leaders in
the pneumococcal and communicable
disease space must be the key
targets for the campaign including the
education of clinic nurses/sisters and
the education of GPs. In the campaign,
there must be clear differentiation
between PCV-13 and PPV-23.
: Should the onus be on the
patient to ask for pneumococcal
vaccines, or should the healthcare
provider be the one to raise this
awareness? What other sources
would raise awareness?
The healthcare provider should be the
one to raise the awareness. During
the survey, we uncovered that 95%
of people consider the doctors as
the most important driver to get the
vaccine, which includes the GP (69%)
and specialist doctor (26%). Other
sources could include websites,
specialised press (healthcare and
wellbeing), colleagues/friends,
newspapers, television and radio.
