TY English Portfolio Activity: October: Black History Month Since 2018 and throughout October, Ireland celebrates Black History Month. We are only the fourth country in the world to officially honour black culture and heritage in this way, following in the footsteps of the US, the UK, and Canada. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v =SmMAtpZDAxg This month your ‘Independent Reading Task’ is to read the novel ‘The Hate You Give’ OR personally select and read another book/audiobook that deals with race. We have some suggestions for you on pg. 2 of your workbook. You will complete 1 book report between now and December as part of your TY Christmas Credits. We have lots of work to do in Ireland regarding racial equality and ending Direct Provision has become a focal point for many campaigners and allies. As we near towards the US elections, we will watch ‘Teach Us All’ on Netflix. ‘Teach Us All’ on Netflix is a visual text (documentary) and social justice campaign on educational inequality set against the backdrop of the 1957 Little Rock school crisis. Use the QR code above or link at the top of this page to firstly view the trailer. In 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Brown vs. Topeka Board of Education that segregated (sperate schools for blacks and whites) were "inherently unequal." In September 1957, as a result of that ruling, nine teen African-American students enrolled at Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. The ensuing struggle between segregationists and integrationists, the State of Arkansas and the federal government, President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus, has become known in modern American history as the "Little Rock Crisis." and the crisis gained world-wide attention. Viewing this documentary will give you background context to understand ‘The Hate you Give’ and also help you create your next TY Assessment Task for credits (online news article task) on the following pages. 25
