Her

Story

When Molly Burke was four years old she was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa a retinal disease causing loss of vision. Her vision would slowly get worse and worse, but by the age of 13 she'd had completely lost her vision. Molly felt terrible and began to cut herself. She became depressed and struggle with mental illness. Molly went to her guidance counsellor for help, only to be told she had brought the bullying on herself. Molly soon transfered to a school for blind, she liked it at first and began to presue her love for music. Before long, the bullying started again. “That’s when I realized I wasn’t being bullied because I’m different. There’s no reason. It’s not my haircut, or how I dress, it’s just something in the other person, and they’ve decided to target me.” She decided to print all the hurtful things people sent to her and showed the principal. They talked about it and her and the girl actually became friends. After all Molly went through she soon joined Me to We’s speakers’ bureau and shared her story about blindness and bullying with 20,000 people at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. She still shares her story.
