Last Thursday night an intimate group of a dozen women came together in the MDS lunch room to learn about baking challah from resident expert Bethany Strulowitz. Bethany is a middle school Judaic studies teacher as well as a mom to 3 MDS students, the rebbitzin of WSIS and an all around Aishet Chayil!

Betheny taught us about the mitzvah of challah baking,

and why it is so special and significant for women. Next we divided up into teams and learned how to make the dough for challah. Bethany shared tips on how to make it great, which included her moms special recipe. We then together made a hafrasha on dough that Bethany had already prepared. This allowed us to participate in the mitzvah of challah as well as learn various ways to braid challah (break-away, 3 strings, 4 strings and even 6 for the not faint if heart)!

At the end of the evening everyone went home with a braided challah and dough to braid at home. A great time was had by all.

Thank you Bethany!

On Monday, November 25, ABC News used the MDS library as a backdrop for an interview with Carlee Soto whose older sister, Victoria, was one of the heroes during the Sandy Hook tragedy. ABC wanted to use a school rather than a studio as an appropriate setting for this interview conducted by anchor David Muir.

This story will be part of a bigger piece commemorating the one-year anniversary of the Sandy Hook tragedy that is scheduled to air on ABC on Sunday, December 15th on “This Week with George Stephanopoulos."
