The Jobs of a President

by Julienne Dweck, [email protected]

In reading, second graders have been thinking a lot about describing their books’ characters. They use character traits based on the characters’ actions, thoughts and words. In social studies, second graders began a unit on the government and learned all about the executive branch and the different jobs of a president. To pull our learning together, students thought about what character traits a good president would need to possess in order to do all of his or her important jobs. Here are some of their responses:

“A president needs to be smart to know if he should veto or sign a bill.” Ness Ades

“A president should be strong minded

so that if he needs to send people to war, he will be able to make the decision.”

–Max Elman

“A president should be confident because he will need to speak in front of many people.” —David Berger

“A president should be worldly so that he can talk to a lot of people from different countries.” —Charlie Nussbaum
