It was wonderful to watch the sixth and seventh graders presenting their science projects at the MDS science fair. The students were full of energy and excitement. The students had to follow the specific standards for the scientific method. After picking a topic, they had to determine a hypothesis (problem to be solved), research the problem, and then problem solve by using the scientific method. They were given a step by step rubric:
1. Citing a question
2. Engaging in background research
3. Formulating a hypothesis
4. Collecting materials
5. Facilitating an experiment
6. Engaging in careful observation
7. Making data tables
8. Graphing the information
9. Analyzing the results
10. Drawing a conclusion
Both sixth and seventh graders represented their work beautifully. Seventh graders displayed their experiments on boards and performed them. Their presentation showed a solid understanding of their topics.
