The Benaki Toy Museum opened to the public in 2017. Its holdings, based on the collection of Maria Argyriadi that is among the most important in Europe, include toys, books, ephemera, clothing and other items associated with childhood from Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas.
The museum’s collection is comprised of 120 car models, all in perfect working order. The oldest is an 1895 Hunnia horse drawn carriage with water pump from Budapest that once served as a fire extinguisher, while the most recent exhibit is a 1996 Aston Martin DB7 Volante.
Many of the cars on show at the museum make a strong impression. A big and striking neon pink-colored convertible Chrysler, measuring 5.5 meters in length and wide enough to comfortably fit six passengers from side to side, is sure to capture the attention of museum visitors. This car certainly epitomizes the American motto “Big Is Beautiful”.
The new Acropolis Museum was designed to offer the best conditions for the exhibition of its exhibits. A walk through its galleries is a walk through history between the masterpieces of the Archaic and Classical periods, but also in the ancient neighborhoods of Athens whose city streets and buildings you can see below when you look through the glass floors of the museum.
