watching an episode of a documentary series about people who survived extraordinary circumstances. Originally, there were going to try a science fiction movie about a survival story about a father and a son lost in the forest after a car accident.
Establishing itself as a producer, writer Smith hired Gary Whitta ("The Book of Secrets") to help him write the script, finally deciding to give it a futuristic environment film.
Smith also had in mind a particular Director: M. Night Shyamalan, nominated for an Oscar for "The Sixth Sense" (1999) and famous for other films like "Signs" (2004) or "The Village" (2004). Shyamalan, who had just released the blockbuster (also very critiziced movie) fantasy film "The Last Airbender", accepted the job, and took part in writing the script.
After Shyamalan, were the sreenwriters winners Mark Boal (Oscar winner for "The Hurt Locker") and Stephen Gaghan (Academy Award for "Traffic") who laid hands on the script.
The film was shot mostly in the jungles of Costa Rica, beeing the first production of Sony in shooting in 4K digital technology
Besides Will and Jaden Smith, the cast of the film includes Sophie Okonedo ("Aeon Flux"), Zoë Kravitz ("X-Men: First Generation") and David Denman ("When a Stranger Calls").
